Rich food. Stagnant air. Too much sugar. Flu shots. Feeling lousy? This is the time of year when we naturally turn to thoughts of getting our body back into tip-top shape. Our head is already wrapped around the idea of health so why not act right away.

But where to start? Is exercise going to do anything for your health if you’re still loaded with toxins? Will the latest fad diet help if you’re hanging onto everything that made you sick in the first place?

Toxins interfere with bodily function. Always. They’re like termites in your house, destroying the framework and structure- and they’re not going to leave until you get rid of them.

Your body needs to detoxify.

There is a lot of disagreement about the effectiveness of doing a detox, but that’s mostly because not everybody is talking about the same thing. Some say detox when they really mean a cleanse. Others say detoxing is dangerous because you’re cutting vital nutrients from your diet. There are even those who say that your body detoxes naturally, so the snake oils and diet plans are all scams.

Your body does detox naturally. The problem is that we live in such a toxic environment that it has a hard time keeping up. When we go through a detox regiment it is to support and stimulate your body to do a better, faster job at what it’s already doing.

The loudest complaint, and maybe the biggest myth, is that detoxing is hard to do.

WHAT IS DETOXING, AND WHY DO I NEED IT?

The Wellness Way has published a book titled, 30 Day Detox Diet. It includes recipes and meal plans that are totally doable, even for the most stiff-necked, burly, “I ain’t eatin’ that…” kind of guy. But perhaps some of the best information of the book is in the early pages, where it outlines the need to detox.

Detoxing is removing the toxins from your organs and expelling them from your body. Two analogies from the book explain the importance of this.

Imagine that, when you were born, you have a “toxin bucket.” This bucket catches all the junk that makes a human being sick. As you develop your bucket gets more and more full, and finally it spills over. That’s the point when you get sick.

What’s happening is that there are too many toxins for your liver to handle, so your body stores them in fat tissue. When they’re stored in fat they are not excreted properly and you reabsorb them. To extend the bucket metaphor- the junk is spilling onto the carpet all around the bucket.

(Keep in mind, because of a mother’s exposure to toxins while the baby is developing, a baby’s bucket may be full when they’re born- which explains the increase of infant sicknesses.)

Detoxing is emptying that bucket out and cleaning the carpet all around.

What’s the difference between a cleanse and a detox?

Picture a long hallway in a school or an office building. In the normal course of the day people walk through, tracking whatever is on their shoes on the floor, coughing and sneezing on the walls and carrying in the bad air from outside. That night the Janitor comes through and scrubs the hallway clean. He mops the floors and disinfects the walls.

What he has done is a cleanse, which is not a bad place to start.

But a detox means opening every door in the hallway and cleaning out the rooms as well.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED TO DETOX?

Your body sends you signs all the time. It’s not shy about telling you when there is stress in a certain area. If your kidneys or bladder are stressed you will have urination issues. Gas, diarrhea or constipation are signs of intestinal stress. Your hormones cannot help but be affected by toxins; mood swings, increased emotions, disrupted cycles, depleted energy… these are all signs that something is wrong.

The truth is, virtually everybody needs to detox. As Dr. Jason Nobles says it, “If you’re breathing, you’re toxing.” Those toxins place stress on your organs, and there is only so much they can take.

Living in our post-Industrial Age has its drawbacks. The majority of people might live longer, and then they die more painfully. At the same time, there are still a staggering number of people who die at a young age from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Our bodies are sponges for all manner of toxic material. We all need to detox.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Between the internet and the checkout line at your grocery store, there is lots of information out there about detoxing. Sadly, there is a lot of bad info out there as well.

How do we choose which one is right? There are teas, shakes, smoothies, diets, teas and even detox water! Which is the right one for you?

The first thing you need to ask is: what are we trying to remove from our body?     Where are your offices? Link does not work.
    Are you in Melbourne, or only Sydney-centric?
    I want to stop living on Sugar. Since Bowel Cancer, I am addicted to lollies in bed. It began during chemo when I could not get up to cook/eat. Butterscotch kept mouth moist and sugar for energy.
    Many Bowel Cancer survivors put on 20-40 kilos after surgery.
    Exercise make body waste move faster.
    We live on Gastrostop, no longer eat fruit/veg if any at all. Entire Rectum removal wrecks your diet.
